JEDDAH — The Urdu Academy Jeddah organized a literary program to promote Urdu language and to mark India’s national Education Day — celebrated every year in the memory of the India’s first Education Minister Maulana Abul Kalam Azad — at the Indian Consulate here Friday.



Guests of honor were Noor Rahman, Ragheb Qureshi, and Editor Gawah Weekly Hyderabad Fazil Hussain Parvez.



Other eminent personalities of the Indian community along with students from various schools were also in attendance.



Indian Consul General B.S. Mubarak presided as the chief guest at the function.



Mubarak appreciated the efforts of the academy and praised the remarkable performance of young children who spoke about Urdu language.



The consul general, who paid rich tributes to freedom fighters and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, said: "To convey the teaching and thoughts of Maulana and provide knowledge about our freedom fighters to our new generation is the main requirement of time. The Urdu Academy’s efforts in promoting Urdu language is commendable."



President of the Urdu Academy Syed JamalUllah Qadri acknowledged the members of the academy and thanked Mubarak and consulate members for extending their help and support to this literary program. He stressed on the promotion of Urdu language among the new generation.



Qadri briefly presented a report of the academy’s activities that were undertaken for the promotion of Urdu language.



An "Azad Souvenir 2014" was also launched on the occasion. An English and Urdu speech contest was also held for students.



The winners of the Urdu speech contest among the boys were: Abdul Rahman Abdullah from Al Wurood International School, first position; Nadeem Fayyaz from Al Falah International School, second position; Fahad Ayyub from International Indian School Jeddah (IISJ), third position; and Yahya Sayed Viqaruddin from Al Falah International School, fourth position.



The winner of the Urdu speech contest among the girls were: Dua Habib Majid from IISJ, first position; Jameela Mushtaq from IISJ, second position; Samia Akram from Al Falah International School, third position; and Maria Emad from Al Shati Al Noor International School, fourth position.



Judges for the Urdu speech contest were Samia Aqueel, Aqeel Jameel, Dr. Aleem Khan Falaki, Dr. Sayed Ali Mahmood and Siraj Wahab.



The winners of the English speech among the boys were: Aditya Andora from Al Wurood International School, first position; Fadhil Basheer from IISJ, second position; Affan Mohammed Nawaz from Al Falah International School, third position; and Abdur Rahman Mohammed Ameen from Al Shati Al Noor International School, fourth position.



The winners of the English speech contest among the girls were: Sayed Hafsa Hina from IISJ, first position; Samia Maheen from Al Falah International School, second position; Sandra Sanjeev from Al Wurood International School, third position; and Shaheena Banu from Al Mawarid International School.



Judges for the English speech contest were Sara Luqman, Shanti Laxman , T.M. Laxman, Dr. Haseebullah and S. P. Singh.



A quiz contest was also conducted by Qadri. The first three winners among the boys were: Mohammed Azam Ali and Fahman Md. Moiz, Al Shati Al Noor International School; Usaid Saud Changan and Talha Shamshad Ali, IISJ; and Thameem Bayazeed and Abdul Rahman Abdullah, Al Wurood International School.



The first three winners among the girls were: Samiya Shahbaz and Yusra Raof, Al Wurood International School; Juwairia Sayed Minhaj and Misbah Naseem Ahmed, Novel International school; and Sayed Mahmood Nida and Khadeeza Nasreen, IISJ.



Mohammed Abbas Khan, Sami Farooqi, Liaqat Ali Khan, Riaz Ahmed and Munawwar khan presented the prizes to the winners.



Mubarak presented a bouquet to all the school principals and some active community members, such as Aijaz Khan, Syed Khaja Viqaruddin and Qudrat Nawaz Baig for promoting the Urdu language.



The program commenced with the recitation of a few verses from the Qur’an by Abdul Rehman Mohammed Ameen followed by a Naat by Ibrahim Riyaz Ahmed.
