JEDDAH – The Saudi Environmental Society in cooperation with major organizations marked Earth Day on April 21 in Jeddah.



The event was held on an area of 5,000 square meters that encompassed three sites consisting of south Obhur, Corniche and Salman Gulf.



Tents were set up that aimed to raise awareness about various environmental issues such as saving water and electricity and waste and recycling.



In a tent focusing on diving courses were held and with the participation of about 200 divers part of the Corniche was cleaned.



Dr. Magda Abu-Ras, spokeswoman for the society, said this important event coincides with increasing global interest in the environment and efforts to reduce pollution.



Sattam Bin Awadh Bin Mazeed, director of Saudi-German Hospital’s department of security and safety, indicated that participation in Earth Day would help reinforce among visitors and the general public the need to preserve the planet.



Mazeed added that the department’s role in increasing awareness is meant to reduce the number of accidents that are reported in the hospital.



Earth Day is an international day that was celebrated for the first time in 1970.
