JEDDAH — People around the world come together to declare their commitment to eradicate hunger in their lifetime on the World Food Day. Each year, students of New Al Wurood International School get together to raise awareness and engage in the movement to end hunger.

This year, the students of NAWIS organized a Food Fair expressing their solidarity and commitment to the UN theme “Climate is changing. Food and agriculture must too” and to the global goal of achieving Zero Hunger in 2030 which cannot be reached without addressing climate change.

The special school assemblies held in boys’ and girls’ sections and the campaign embedded food fair reflected the collective tasks of the students and teachers to turn commitments into action on the ground.

Students dictated actions to themselves to combat climate change in their own simple yet effective way. They chanted and reminded each other that they can tackle climate change by changing their daily habits and making simple decisions to diversify the diet, keep soils and water clean, buy organic, buy only what is needed, limit plastic, store food wisely, love the leftovers, be an eco-traveler, make the surroundings greener and most importantly not to waste food and water. They exhorted each other to pick at least four of those simple actions and stick to them.

Led by the student council, students hosted class wise food stalls where healthy, homemade recipes of multinational cookery were served and shared. The campaign in fact kick-started with the parents preparing specialty dishes that reflects their family and country heritage.

This free event prepared students to be a conscientious or ethical consumers and to spread messages against wastage of food. By shining a spotlight on the very specific issue, the event focused on changing student attitudes towards food wastage and food remains.

The Vice Principals Peter Ronald and Ms. Bushara Kader thanked the parents of both the sections for their active participation in the campaign by strongly supporting their children and thereby making the event a great success. — SG
