NEW YORK — Wil Myers hit for the second cycle in San Diego history and the first of his career on Monday as the Padres beat the Colorado Rockies 5-3.
Myers singled in the first, doubled home a run in the third, homered in a three-run sixth and tripled in the eighth. The other Padres cycle was also accomplished at Coors Field, by Matt Kemp on Aug. 14, 2015.

Myers’ cycle was the eighth by a Rockies’ opponent at Coors Field and the 15th there overall. Hunter Renfroe hit a two-run homer for the Padres, who got a superb spot start by Jarred Cosart followed by fine relief work as they evened their record at 4-4 with their third win in the past four games. The Rockies have lost two straight.

Cubs 3, Dodgers 2

Anthony Rizzo lined a game-winning RBI single to left with two outs in the ninth inning, giving Chicago a victory over Los Angeles in a rain-delayed game.

Rizzo hit a 1-1 pitch from Dodgers reliever Kenley Jansen to score Jon Jay from third and send the Dodgers to their third loss in four games. It was Rizzo’s sixth career walk-off RBI.The win capped a banner night as the Cubs raised their 2016 World Series flag and National League pennant in pre-game ceremonies in front of an appreciative crowd of 41,166.

Yankees 8, Rays 1

Michael Pineda retired the first 20 hitters and struck out 11 in 7 2/3 electrifying innings, and New York hit three home runs in a victory over Tampa Bay Rays. Pineda (1-1) worked quickly and often used off-speed pitches during his seventh career double-digit strikeout game. Aaron Judge, Chase Headley and Starlin Castro went deep for the Yankees.

Tigers 2, Red Sox 1

Nick Castellanos squeezed a ground ball through the left side to score Andrew Romine from second base with two out in the eighth inning and give Detroit a victory over Chris Sale and Boston.

Justin Wilson (1-0) got Detroit’s third win in the four-game series after pitching a scoreless eighth inning. Francisco Rodriguez gave up a leadoff single in the ninth but retired the side to notch his second save.

Athletics 2, Royals 0

Rookie Jharel Cotton rebounded from a rough initial start to pitch a gem as Oakland won in Kansas City’s home opener. The A’s have won seven straight games against the Royals. Kansas City lost a home opener for the first time since 2012. The Royals were shut out in their home opener for the first time since Bert Blyleven blanked them in 1971.

Cotton (1-1) threw seven scoreless innings, walked three and struck out six, including the side in the fourth. He threw 61 strikes in 98 pitches. Cotton allowed only two runners to reach second base.

Giants 4, Diamondbacks 1

San Francisco took advantage of pitcher Matt Moore’s swinging bunt to score three runs in a two-error play that led directly to a victory over Arizona in the home opener at AT&T Park.

Moore teamed with closer Mark Melancon to cool the hot-hitting Diamondbacks, who had begun the series with a five-game winning streak while leading the major leagues in several offensive categories, including runs (48).

Nationals 14, Cardinals 6

Stephen Drew had three hits and drove in four runs, Bryce Harper had four hits and two walks, and Adam Eaton had three hits and three RBIs as Washington came from behind three times to win. Ryan Zimmerman had three hits and Jayson Werth and Matt Wieters each added two for the Nationals, who had 19 hits to overcome an ugly four-error night. Stephen Piscotty had two hits and two RBIs for the Cardinals, and Yadier Molina and Matt Carpenter added two hits.

Mariners 6, Astros 0

James Paxton tossed seven shutout innings and struck out eight to get the win in Seattle’s home opener. Seattle’s Nelson Cruz highlighted his three-hit performance with a two-run single in the fifth inning. Mitch Haniger had two hits, including an RBI single.

Mets 4, Phillies 3

Jay Bruce hit two homers, including a go-ahead, two-run, two-out, eighth-inning shot to right field, to send New York to victory. Mets reliever Jerry Blevins (1-0) earned the win, and Addison Reed got his second save in as many nights despite allowing a solo home run to Phillies first baseman Brock Stassi, his first career long ball.

Reds 7, Pirates 1

Eugenio Suarez and Scooter Gennett each hit solo homers, and Cincinnati took advantage of five walks to get the road win. Pittsburgh’s Tyler Glasnow (0-1) had a rough 2017 debut. He gave up five runs and four hits with five walks and a strikeout in 1 2/3 innings. — Reuters
