MADINAH –

Work on the expansion of Sayyid Al-Shuhada Mosque in Uhud in Madinah is almost complete and the renovated mosque can accommodate 15,000 worshippers at a time, said Mohammed Abuhumaid, director general of the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Call and Guidance in the Madinah province.

“The mosque will open to worshippers before the holy month of Ramadan. About 95 percent of work on the project has been completed and the remaining work and facilities will be ready within the next few days,” Abuhumaid said while speaking to Al-Madina Arabic daily.

The ongoing work includes the installation of light and sound systems and other electrical works, he said, adding that the project, which was carried out an area of 8,000 square meters, cost SR42 million.

“We have installed the most advanced sound system in the mosque,” the director general said. The mosque will have support buildings to accommodate the imam and muezzins, in addition to smart toilets, some of them designed for use by people with special needs.

The mosque is located in the center of Sayyid Al-Shuhada area of Uhud, the site of one of the most important battles in which the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, took part.

“The mosque will be an imposing architectural marvel and one of a series of historic places in the holy city of Madinah,” he said, adding that the new mosque was renovated in the style of Islamic architecture.

“You can see a blend of tradition and modernity here. The mosque has a huge dome and the pillars inside are decorated with Islamic art. Its light system covers all parts of the mosque while the floor is covered with luxurious carpets,” he said.

“It will be a unique Islamic landmark in Madinah,” Abuhumaid added.
