WASHINGTON — Defending champion Ivo Karlovic squandered a match point and 30 aces in losing to Germany’s 131st-ranked Peter Gojowczyk in three tie-breaker sets Thursday at the ATP Hall of Fame Open.

Gojowczyk fired 12 aces of his own and saved one break point in each set of his 7-6 (7/5), 6-7 (1/7), 7-6 (7/4) triumph over two hours and 26 minutes at the Newport, Rhode Island, grasscourt event.

The 28-year-old from Munich booked a Saturday semi-final date against 249th-ranked Australian qualifier Matthew Ebden, who rallied to oust Germany’s Tobias Kamke 4-6, 7-6 (8/6), 6-4.

Friday’s final quarterfinal matches send US top seed John Isner against compatriot Dennis Novikov and American Bjorn Fratangelo against French fourth seed Pierre-Hugues Herbert.

Dutra Silva tops Monfils

Rogerio Dutra Silva upset second-seeded Gael Monfils 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals of the Croatia Open Thursday.

The 64th-ranked Brazilian next faces Italian Alessandro Giannessi, after he beat qualifier Kenny De Schepper of France 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.

Also in the second round, defending champion Fabio Fognini overcame a second-set wobble to win 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 against unseeded Nicolas Kicker of Argentina.

The third-seeded Italian had his serve broken twice set by Kicker in the second set.

In the quarterfinals, Fognini will play lucky loser entry Andrey Rublev of Russia.

Rublev beat last year’s finalist Andrej Martin of Slovakia 7-6 (5), 7-5.

Garcia loses to Martincova

Top-seeded Caroline Garcia of France was beaten by 140th-ranked Tereza Martincova 7-5, 7-6 (1) in the second round of the Gstaad Ladies Championship Thursday.

Although the 22-year-old Czech player had no aces — compared to 11 for 20th-ranked Garcia — she was strong on her second serve.

Martincova dropped serve when leading 5-3 in the second set before racing to victory in the tiebreaker.

Second-seeded Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands is through to the quarterfinals of the clay-court event in the Swiss Alps after easing to a 6-4, 6-2 second-round win against qualifier Anna Zaja of Germany.

She next plays fifth-seeded Johanna Larsson of Sweden, who won 1-6, 7-5, 6-1 against Barbara Haas of Austria.

Roddick, Clijsters into Hall of Fame

Former world number ones and Grand Slam singles champions Kim Clijsters and Andy Roddick are among five people who will be inducted Saturday into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

Joining the former pro tour legends will be Dutch four-time Paralympic wheelchair tennis medalist Monique Kalkman-van den Bosch, tennis journalist and historian Steve Flink and the late Vic Braden, a groundbreaking tennis instructor who died in 2014 at age 85.

Belgium’s Clijsters, 34, won the 2005, 2009 and 2010 US Opens and the 2011 Australian Open singles crowns. She spent 19 weeks atop the rankings and had a WTA career record of 523-127, capturing 41 WTA titles before retiring in 2012.

"I feel very honored," Clijsters said. Roddick, 34, spent 13 weeks atop the rankings, topping the year-end list in 2003. Roddick won his only Grand Slam singles title at the 2003 US Open, losing four other Slam finals to Roger Federer. He retired after the 2012 US Open with 32 career ATP titles and a 612-213 record.

Kalkman-van den Bosch was diagnosed with cancer at age 14 and left paralyzed below the waist. She won 1984 Paralympic gold in table tennis, then switched to wheelchair tennis, taking three more titles to become the first woman to win Paralympic gold medals in two different individual sports.

"By celebrating and promoting wheelchair tennis through the Hall of Fame, we are offering encouragement for recently injured people," she said. "It’s important for these people to understand what can be possible for them in their new situations, and I’m so grateful to be part of this."

Flink, a long-time radio correspondent and statistician for television coverage, authored two books on the greatest matches in tennis history.

Braden was a pioneer in uniting scientific research into tennis training, applying research and psychology backgrounds to his tennis instruction while working with prodigy talent as well as other instructors. — Agencies
