Saudi Gazette report

DAMMAM — Saudi Customs seized six small aircraft known as Phantom, which are operated by remote control and widely used in smuggling operations, in the last 10 months.

The latest criminal incident involving the device was an attempt to smuggle narcotic pills into a Unaizah prison about a week ago.

Saudi Customs spokesman Issa al-Issa told Al-Watan that the import of these aircraft, which operate with or without cameras, are not allowed in the Kingdom without obtaining the approval of the Ministry of Interior through Domestic Flight Security.

He pointed out that the Saudi Customs seized six Phantom aircraft since the beginning of the current Hijri year.

Despite the ban on import and sale of these aircraft, a number of social media accounts have been promoting these types of aircraft at prices ranging from SR2,000 to SR20,000, depending on the features of the device.

According to an online dealer contacted by Al-Watan through Instagram, the delivery of these aircraft is done after the transfer of a specified amount and the delivery is done in person by a special representative.

All products are original but locally assembled. The aircraft imported after dismantling the parts and are re-assembled after arrival in the Kingdom.

The dealer reassured about the availability of spare parts for any type of aircraft, which can be reprogrammed with additional features.

This type of aircraft is used extensively by amateur photographers, professional videographers and fishermen who go out in the sea.

The owner of the electronic store said the aircraft is used for various purposes, including entertainment. It is also used in security operations.
