MANILA — The defending champion Gilas Pilipinas ended its stint in the 2017 Jones Cup on a positive note, blasting perennial rival Iran, 90-82, in the last playing date of the annual international tournament Sunday.

The Philippines finished at fourth place with a 6-3 win-loss record, relinquishing its title to eventual winner Canada, the team that defeated Gilas at the start of the 10-nation tourney.

The Canadians won the title with a 8-1 mark, suffering their only loss at the hands of the host, Chinese Taipei Team-A. Although it also finished with the same record as Canada, Lithuania took home the silver by virtue of the winner-over-the-other rule, having lost to Canada.

South Korea bagged the silver with a 7-2 record, after defeating Chinese Taipei Team-A, 54-50, in the tournament’s final game Sunday night.

Iraq, Iran and Chinese Taipei-A all wound up with a 4-5 record, but based on the quotient system, Iraq placed fifth, Iran sixth, and Chinese Taipei-A seventh.

Chinese Taipei-B (2-7) took eighth place, Japan (1-8) ninth, and India (0-9), tenth.

Just like in the game against India Saturday, Gilas Pilipinas showed tremendous firepower against Iran right from the get-go.

Mike Myers led Gilas with 21 points and 11 boards. Matthew Wright was just as explosive with 20 markers, including a three-pointer that put the game away, 84-69, with 2:05 left.

Christian Standhardinger tallied 13 markers and 4 boards.

Most members of this squad will be playing for the Gilas cadet team in the upcoming Southeast Asian Games while three—Jio Jalalon, Roger Pogoy, and Matthew Wright—will join the core of the Gilas team in the Fiba Asia Cup next month.

Other results:

Lithuania def. Iraq, 99-83; Canada def. Chinese Taipei-B, 117-83; Japan def. India, 77-61; South Korea def. Chinese Taipei-A, 54-50.
