MANILA — The GlobalPort Batang Pier showed immense firepower after getting a new explosive import, clobbering the Phoenix Fuel Masters, 100-91, for their first win after an initial setback in the PBA Governors’ Cup Wednesday night.

GlobalPort led by as many as 30 points but had to fight for dear life in the endgame as Phoenix launched a furious rally.

Murphey Holloway debuted in the PBA with aplomb, firing 29 points and grabbing 26 rebounds for GlobalPort while playing tough defense that limited the usually high-scoring Fuel Masters to just 59 points after three quarters—even with ace gunner Matthew Wright back on their roster following his stint with Gilas Pilipinas in the recent Jones Cup in Taipei.

Terrence Romeo solidly backed up Holloway with 21 points and five assists. His clutch baskets late in the game poured cold water on the come-backing Fuel Masters, which suffered their first loss after two straight wins.

NLEX 122, Rain or Shine 114

The NLEX Road Warriors continued their amazing resurgence, beating the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, 122-114, in double overtime.

It was the Road Warriors’ third straight win in the Governors’ Cup and fifth overall dating back to the last conference—NLEX’s best start in franchise history. Ironically, it was just a season ago when the team finished tied second to the last spot in the Commissioner’s Cup.

The game was closely fought in regulation and in the first overtime period, but the Road Warriors pulled away in the second extension after the Painters fell into a maze of errors.

It was the first time NLEX coach Yeng Guiao beat his former team, which suffered its first loss after debuting in the conference with a win.

Import Aaron Fuller once again exploded for NLEX, churning out 33 points, 20 rebounds, three assists, two steals, and one block in over 48 minutes of play.

Kevin Alas was again the top local scorer for the Road Warriors, finishing with 24 points, 10 boards, five assists, and one steal, while committing just one turnover in almost 38 minutes on the court. JR Quinahan added 13 markers, Larry Fonacier had 11 while Carlo Lastimosa chipped in 10.

JD Weatherspoon led the Painters with 20 points and 16 rebounds while Beau Belga tallied 15 markers and nine boards.

James Yap added 14 points, half of them scored in the fourth quarter. However, he was held scoreless in the two overtime periods, failing to cap a career milestone of 10,000 points by just three points.

Games Friday: Kia Picanto (0-2) vs. TNT KaTropa Texters (0-0) and Star Hotshots (1-0) vs. Alaska Aces (0-2).
