MANILA — Parading a new and more explosive import, the Star Hotshots extended the misery of the hard-luck Alaska Aces with a thumping 101-92 victory in the PBA Governors’ Cup in Antipolo City Friday night.

The Hotshots nailed their second win in as many games while Alaska fell to a 0-3 win-loss mark and a franchise record 11 straight defeat going back to the last Commissioner’s Cup.

Malcolm Hill, the 21-year-old former U.S. NCAA star who made his pro debut as Star’s new import, finished with a team-high 28 points on top of 11 rebounds, and two assists in 38 minutes.

Hill saved his best for last when he nailed two clutch baskets in the endgame that doomed Alaska’s chances of finally getting the elusive “W.”

Paul Lee added 18 points, five assists, four boards, one steal, and one block in 33 minutes while Ian Sangalang had 16 points and eight boards.

LaDontae Henton paced Alaska with 34 points, five rebounds, four assists, and three steals in over 41 minutes while Chris Banchero chalked up 21 points, seven rebounds, six assists and two steals that all meant nothing in the end.

Alaska missed the services of Calvin Abueva and rookie Carl Cruz, who Alaska management opted to put on the reserve list to let him concentrate on his role as a member of the Gilas Pilipinas squad seeing action in the FIBA Asia Cup in Lebanon next month.

Even without two key players, Alaska put up a strong fight, slashing Star’s lead to four points, 95-91. But Hill struck back with back-to-back jumpers that scuttled the Aces’ uprising.

TNT 106, Kia 96

Michael Craig Jr. made a huge splash with a triple double in his PBA debut as he led the TNT KaTropa Texters to a 106-96 victory over the Kia Picanto.

Craig—a wide-bodied import in the same mold as TNT Commissioner’s Cup reinforcement Joshua Smith—churned out 21 points, 13 rebounds, and 12 assists as the Texters began their Governors’ Cup campaign with a win. Craig also had three blocks and one steal but committed nine turnovers in almost 39 minutes.

Troy Rosario led TNT’s locals with 18 points, 10 rebounds, and two assists in 32 minutes while FIBA Asia Cup-bound Jayson Castro tallied 16 points, four rebounds, four assists, two steals, and one block in just 22 minutes. Kelly Williams added 11 markers. Markeith Cummings led Kia with 27 points and six rebounds but had 10 turnovers as the Picanto tumbled to their third straight defeat. His last two points came from a layup off a steal from Craig that cut TNT’s lead to five points, 91-96, with 3:40 left.

The Texters, however, came roaring back to finish off the Picanto.

Games Saturday: San Miguel Beermen (0-0) vs. Blackwater Elite (0-2) and Meralco Bolts (2-0) vs. Rain or Shine Elasto Painters (1-1).
