Some new features leaked about the new iPhone 8

August 04, 2017

Several features have been leaked about the upcoming iPhone from both official and unofficial sources. No date is set for the launch yet but rumors predict it to be between September and November. It’s worth noting that the iPhone is hitting its 10-year anniversary and might introduce a different design from what we’re used to. According to several sources, here’s a summary of some of the major specs to expect to see in the next iPhone:

A Glass body... and no home button

iPhone might move away from the aluminum used in previous iPhones and will adopt a glass body instead. Remember the iPhone 4?

Leaks also say that the entire iPhone 8 lineup will feature OLED technology. The curved OLED panel would make the iPhone similar to the Samsung Galaxy 8. Reports reveal that the upcoming iPhone’s flexible plastic OLED screen might completely cover the front of the device and have the highest screen-to-body ratio of any phone. It’s predicted it will have a 5.8-inch display with 5.15 inches of usable area. Virtual buttons will replace the famous Home button.

Face recognition

This is a transition from touch recognition to face ID. According to analysts in the industry, Apple has been working on facial recognition that leverages dual cameras for biometric identification. References to infrared face detection in the code have been discovered in addition to reports revealing Apple has developed a rear-facing 3D laser system and patenting for a sensor telling if you’re human.

Wireless charging?

Apple may use an inductive-style wireless charging solution that is similar to the Apple Watch. Apple supplier Wistron has claimed that wireless charging is planned for at least one iPhone model. Developer Guilherme Rambo announced, “The battery widget will use a different icon for the new iPhone, this suggests a different charging mechanism”.

A11 chip

All upcoming iPhone models are expected to use Apple’s A11 chip, including the iPhone 8 and the 4.7 and 5.5-inch iPhones that are estimated to be the iPhone 7s and the iPhone 7s Plus.

TSMC began production on Apple’s A11 processor in May 2017. The A11 chip is expected to be both faster and more power efficient than the current A10, manufactured on a 16-nanometer process, Mac Rumors reported. The good news is it possibly could lead to speedier performance and better battery life.
