Islamic GPS is an augmented reality app that allows users to find mosques and Islamic landmarks around the world.

By holding up your phone, the nearest mosque will appear with directions. If it’s a historic mosque, information is provided.

The app aims to teach the history of the Muslim World in an innovative and useful manner.

“What inspired me is back in late 2012, I visited Istanbul and didn’t know much about Islamic history around the place where there are amazing mosques,” the app’s founder Ikbal Hussain told Saudi Gazette. “I searched on the apps store and wasn’t able to find any apps that can help me find what was around me.”

This triggered Hussain to return to London and set up a team to develop a travel app.

The app store includes several apps with mosque finders. Islamic GPS offers a radius to up to 20 kilometers for finding places to pray with an augmented reality feature. This means it gives you a live view of the world using GPS data.

“It works really well abroad when you’re lost, trying to find mosques and monuments to visit,” says Hussain.

The app was launched in 2016 and now functions around 94 countries, and includes the largest Islamic landmarks of the Holy Mosques in Makkah, Medina, and Jerusalem.

It’s an innovative way to learn the history of the Muslim world, according to the founders, for Muslims to not only finding the Qibla but learn about the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina, Topkapı Palace, Al-Azhar University, Karaouiyine Mosque and many others.

Islamic GPS is hitting a hot target. The virtual reality market is expected to reach $30 billion by 2020, during which virtual reality will be used by mass consumers.
