Obhur set to have world's longest suspended bridge

— Obhur suspended bridge project underatken by Jeddah Metro Company is expected to compete with international bridges not only in regard to its length and height but also its width which will be 74 meters with eight lanes — six for cars and two for pedestrians.

Makkah Emir Prince Khaled Al-Faisal, who is also chairman of the high committee to supervise public transport projects in Jeddah, said three public transport projects which are the Corniche tram, the naval taxi and the Obhur bridge would be offered to the private sector to implement.

The bridge will be 380 meters long, 74 meters wide and 51 meters high. It will connect north and south Obhur.

According to a Makkah daily report, the company which has designed the project has located 150 real estate units obstructing the project.

Informed sources said these units would be demolished and their owners compensated.

They said the point of execution will be in the area adjacent to the Madinah road after King Abdulaziz International Airport from the western side.

The Jeddah public transport projects will consist of a metro which will cross a distance of 152 km in addition to buses.

The sources said the bridge can accommodate more than 6,000 vehicles per hour.
