RIYADH — The Supreme Court has announced that Thursday, Sept. 21, was the first day of Muharram, marking the beginning of the Hijri year 1439.

The court said in a statement that the sighting of the crescent of the month of Muharram was confirmed with the testimony of eyewitnesses on the evening of Wednesday, Dhul Hijja 29,1438.

The moon sighting also conforms with the Umm Al-Qura calendar. — SPA
