JEDDAH — Six Pakistani nationals who allegedly robbed two gold shops of jewelry worth of SR10.6 million have been arrested in Riyadh.
Police said the men had overpowered a gold shop employee in one of the streets in Riyadh, kidnapped him and forced him to open his shop. They then stole the jewelry and escaped in a car they had rented using forged documents.
Of the six arrested Pakistanis, two were preparing to leave the Kingdom with the stolen goods. They were in the process of making arrangements with sea cargo offices in Jeddah and Riyadh to dispatch the shipment to Pakistan, police said.
“We had received a complaint from a Saudi shop owner that his Yemeni employee was attacked and forcibly dragged into a vehicle, which was found to be rented after furnishing forged documents,” Col. Fawaz Al-Maiman, spokesman for Riyadh police, said in a statement on Sunday.
He said the Riyadh emir had instructed the police to apprehend the culprits immediately and they formed special task force to investigate the case.
The officers zoomed in on six people, who were all Pakistanis. Police seized the car rented by the suspects and also keys used to open the gold shop, Al-Maiman added.
During investigations, police found a large quantity of mobile devices in the packed cargo belonging to one of the suspects. It turned out that the mobile devices were stolen from a telecommunications company. Police recovered 1,225 new mobile devices worth SR600,000 from the men.
Al-Maiman said the suspects confessed that they had stolen jewelry worth of SR5 million from one of the shops.
