Maximum 5 work visas to recruit house helps

JEDDAH — The Ministry of Labor and Social Development has decided to restrict the number of work visas issued to individuals applying through its Musaned electronic site to recruit domestic helps to a maximum of five, Al-Madina newspaper reported.

The ministry said an individual could hire three men and two women to work in the households. Men usually work as drivers or cooks while the women are mostly housemaids or housekeepers.

It said categories of people are entitled to recruit house helps from abroad include married Saudi men with or without children, widowed or divorced men with or without children, single Saudi men, widowed Saudi women with or without children and unmarried Saudi women.

Married expatriate men with or without children, foreign women married to Saudis, foreign widows of Saudi men, divorcees of Saudis or single mothers deserted by their Saudi husbands are also eligible to apply for work visas for domestic helps.

The applicants should have a monthly salary of not less than SR5,000 or a bank balance of not less than SR35,000.

The ministry explained that the married Saudi men with children will be granted a maximum of five recruitment visas while married Saudis without children and widowed or divorced Saudi men with children will be allowed three visas.

Widowed or divorced women with children will be granted three work visas while expatriates will be issued a maximum of two visas to hire house helps from abroad.

The ministry said out of 849,228 electronic applications for work visas made last year, it has approved 316,212 and rejected 533,016, which is about 62 percent of all applications.
