Saudi Arabia summons ambassador to Germany for consultation

November 18, 2017

Riyadh — Saudi Arabia has summoned its ambassador to Germany for consultations following statements made by German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel about the political crisis in Lebanon.

The Saudi foreign ministry said the government would deliver a protest note to Germany's ambassador in Riyadh over what it said were "outrageous and unjustified" comments Gabriel made after a meeting with his Lebanese counterpart.

After a meeting in Berlin with Lebanese Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil, Gabriel told reporters that Europe "could not tolerate the adventurism that has spread there".

"Such remarks provoke the surprise and disapproval of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia which considers them as aimless and based on false information that would not help bring about stability in the region," an official source of the Ministry of Foreign affairs said in a statement carried by Saudi Press Agency.

“It is supposed that the statement made by the German foreign minister would not represent the position of the friendly government of Federal Republic of Germany, considered by the Kingdom as a reliable partner in the fight against terrorism and extremism and the endeavor to bring about security and stability in the region,” the statement said. — Agencies
