NAJRAN — A patient of sleeve gastrectomy died due to a medical error four years ago and his case is still unresolved.

The patient Dhiyab Al-Jabbar decided to undergo a sleeve gastrectomy in preparation for his wedding to reduce his weight. He went to King Khalid Hospital in Najran with his younger brother Aidh. They had both read an ad about a new American team at the hospital doing sleeve gastrectomy surgeries and wanted to do the surgery. They had not told their family of their plans before driving to the hospital.

Dhiyab Al-Jabbar died during the surgery and his father filed a complaint against the hospital and the medical staff that operated on him. The case file was being transferred between six different health ministers over the past 54 months.

The father included in his complaint that the doctors operated on his son when his son did not meet the physical requirements to undergo the surgery, there was no specialized obesity center at the hospital, the doctor that operated on his son was a resident doctor with less than four years of experience rather than a consultant, the surgery was done after work hours and the father was given a false report of the case.

The case is currently with the Judicial Medical Commission as an unbiased entity to look into the case.
