JEDDAH
— The Dar Al-Hekma University Model United Nations (DAHMUN) began its eighth edition on Sunday with the inaugural ceremony. An academic simulation of the deliberations at the UN, the DAHMUN was the first of its kind as well as the first to be hosted by a university in Saudi Arabia.

It aims to provide a platform for building global social awareness and leadership skills among the students.

Chief guest Ambassador Askar Mussinov, director of Peace, Security and Mediation & Conflict Resolution Unit at the OIC, expressed his appreciation for the initiative and enthusiasm exhibited by Dar Al-Hekma University in continually providing a forum for young minds to discuss issues of global importance and contribute to making the world a more beautiful place, in line with the aim of the United Nation.

He also expressed his belief in giving opportunities to more and more youth to be engaged in activities that have a focus on current world affairs.

The opening ceremony was inaugurated by Dr. Sanaa Askool, dean of Students; Ambassador Askar Mussinov; Dr. Chaman Rahim, advisor & founder, DAHMUN; and Aamna Ali, secretary general of DAHMUN.

Presiding over the function, Dr. Sanaa Askool expressed the importance of conducting such events that help the students and faculty.

She said: “The university’s commitment to provide all-round development of its students is evident from the large number of activities which it provides to its students at the national and even international level, including the holding of the Model United Nations Conference, which gives them a broad outlook.”

Speaking about this year’s edition, Dr. Chaman Rahim said: “It is an attempt to engage students with global challenges, and encourage them to think creatively, with an international outlook to problem solving. Therefore, the Eighth edition of DAHMUN is all focused on “Beyond the havoc: Building a haven.”

Aamna Ali added that many types of talents can be developed by participating in Dar Al Hekma Model United Nations — including skills such as teamwork, illustrative and persuasive writing, debating, and negotiation; all of which are important for personal development and future success.

The conference is the initiative of the MUN club members in Dar Al-Hekma and was led by Dr. Chaman Rahim. The club started back in 2007 and now has over 150 members.

This year’s event will focus on international issues like: United Nations Institute for Disarmaments Research (UNIDIR), Security Council, Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), Historical Cabinet, Human Rights Council (HRC).
