JEDDAH – Signs of senility have appeared so soon on the newly developed district of Al-Waha in east Jeddah as a result of environmental pollution caused by overflowing sewage in its streets.

Pools formed by the sewage overflow spread a nasty smell all over the district and they have become ideal breeding grounds for disease-carrying mosquitoes. The pools also destroy asphalted roads.

Residents have complained about the poor sanitary condition of their district, which was developed only five years ago. They urged the municipality to implement sewage projects and other infrastructure development required by the district to ensure and enhance the well being of its people.

Ali Salim Al-Ghamdi expressed his indignation over the increasing number of sewage swamps in Al-Waha’s streets and attributed it to the lack of a sewage network.

“Another reason for the surfacing of sewage is the reluctance of some residents to empty their septic tanks regularly and on time,” he told Okaz/Saudi Gazette.

He urged the municipality to take immediate measures to end the suffering of the district›s residents. “If I had known the poor condition of infrastructure in Al-Waha I would not have built a house in this district spending huge amounts of money,” he pointed out.

Turki Al-Johani has said Al-Waha is suffering from premature aging due to negligence by the authorities. “It’s surrounded by all sorts of pollutants. Garbage has accumulated all over the district,” he said while accusing the municipality of neglecting its duty to keep the district clean.

Fayez Bahadiq also spoke about the worsening condition of Al-Waha as a result of environmental pollution caused by sewage and accumulating garbage.

He urged the authorities to establish a full-fledged sewage network in the district and take measures to remove garbage regularly to protect the health of its residents.
