NEW DELHI — Indian federal police arrested the son of former finance minister P. Chidambaram on Wednesday, but the agency which has been investigating suspected criminal misconduct related to approvals of investment deals, did not reveal the charges.
Karti Chidambaram was detained at the airport in the southern city of Chennai and will be appear in court later in the day, Abhishek Dayal, spokesman of the Central Bureau of Investigation said.
“The reasons for the arrest will be provided in the court.”
The national investigative agency has alleged that Karti received money from INX Media for using his influence to manipulate a tax probe against it in a case of violation of Foreign Investment Promotion Board conditions to receive investment from Mauritius. The CBI has said that it also seized vouchers of Rs 10 lakh which were allegedly paid for the services.
P. Chidambaram, 72, served twice as finance minister in the Congress-led coalition that ran India for a decade, from 2004-08 and then from 2012 until the party’s election defeat at the hands of Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in May 2014.
He has been a vocal critic of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and current Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.
In May, police raided the homes of Chidambaram and his son as part of the probe into approvals of foreign investment proposals.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED), too, is probing Karti in the case under provisions of Prevention of Money Laudering Act (PMLA). The agency had only last week arrested Karti’s chartered accountant Bhaskarraman. Bhaskaraman was arrested from right outside Karti’s hotel room in Delhi.
The opposition Congress said Karti’s arrest is a “classic diversionary tactic” of the Modi government.
“Classic diversionary tactic of the Modi government to hide their own corrupt governance model that is being exposed on a daily basis — be it Nirav Modi, Mehul Choksi, Dwarka Das Seth Jewelers. The BJP govt continues it’s vendetta and vindictive politics to target opponents. However, it will not stop the Congress from bringing the truth out to the people,” said the Congress. — Agencies
