RIYADH — Princess Lamia Bint Majid, secretary-general of Alwaleed Philanthropies, was awarded the “Women Leader in Community Development Excellence Award”. The charitable foundation is chaired by Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal.

The Middle East Excellence Awards Institute gave away the awards at the 21st Global Women Leaders Conference held at Burj Al-Arab hotel in Dubai, UAE.

The conference was powered and organized by Datamatix in conjunction with the Middle East Excellence Awards Institute, which has been honoring women leaders and executed with the awards for the past 18 years.

The conference recognized Alwaleed Philanthropies’ work with Waeya Legal, a local initiative that aims to educate women and youth in Saudi Arabia on their legal rights.

In addition to founding the Waeya app, it will provide around-the-clock legal advice and court locations. This initiative was launched in line with Alwaleed Philanthropies’ goals of empowering Saudi women and youth "to do the most good in the most effective way possible from within their community."

Celebrating 20 years of successfully organizing one of the largest global women leaders’ events, Woibex, which is held annually on International Women’s Day, has become a global platform, linking women leaders and personalities. The event aims to highlight international strategies on how to empower women to lead the business sector and explore dimensions of leadership.

Princess Lamia was invited as one of the key speakers to discuss the role of women in the Kingdom and their capacity to shape the future. “We know that women empowerment and integration in the workforce is one of the most effective ways of driving social and economic progress, and this goal influences a large part of our work,” Princess Lamia said.

The princess gave a synopsis of Alwaleed Philanthropies’ scope in promoting local initiatives and highlighted the Foundation’s main area of focus this year, which is empowering women and youth. She added that the Foundation’s new strategy is a critical part of how its initiatives will help support the vision of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman and Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman.

In her remarks after receiving the award, Princess Lamia dwelt around the importance of empowering women and youth in the Kingdom.

“Technology has changed the world; the use of data and evidence-based information has become imperative in confronting key challenges of our world today. The Waeya app has educated Saudi women regarding their legal and human rights, and has also empowered those who might have lacked a voice," she said.

Among the conference’s attendees were global dignitaries, ministers, officials, women celebrities, ambassadors, members of parliament and politicians, businesswomen, executives, women entrepreneurs, leaders in public and private organizations.

For over 37 years, Alwaleed Philanthropies has supported and initiated projects in over 164 countries to uplift the underprivileged people regardless of gender, race, or religion.

"We collaborate with a range of philanthropic, governmental, and educational organizations to combat poverty, empower women and youth, develop communities, provide disaster relief and create cultural understanding through education. Together, we can build bridges for a more compassionate, tolerant, and accepting world," the charity said in a press release. — SG
