MAKKAH — The Saudi Commission of Tourism and National Heritage organized a campaign to clean the litter from around Mount Ghar Thour on Saturday, Al-Madina newspaper reported.

The commission cooperated with “Exalting The Holy City” volunteer project in its second phase of cleaning historical sites in Makkah.

The current phase of campaign focused on Mount Ghar Thour with the participation of 600 people, who picked up more than 200 bags of trash from the area.

The participants went through a tour assisted by a guide so they would understand the significance of the site they are in.

Mount Ghar Thour houses the historic Thour cave where the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his companion Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) spent three days and nights hiding from the eyes of the pagan Quraish at the start of their migration to Madinah from Makkah. The place is visited by many pilgrims, tourists, residents and citizens for its historical significance.

The commission recognizes its responsibility to maintain and protect historical sites in the holy city, one official said.
