A SAUDI man could not bear the number of traffic violations in the streets of Saudi Arabia, so he took it upon himself to document and report any violations that he comes across, from illegal parking to driving in an opposite direction.

Hamed Dakhil uses his cellphone and a Go Pro to snap pictures of violating drivers, to the point where he was nicknamed ‘a violator’s horror’ and the right hand of traffic police.

Dakhil snapped and reported tens of traffic violation cases and posted them on his social media under the hashtag ‘If we don’t care about our country, we don’t deserve to live in it’. His campaign resulted in several fines being issued thanks to his efforts.

But Dakhil told Al Arabiya that he has received strong backlash on social media.

“Anyone who argues with me over the reasons why I report traffic violations loses the argument,” he said.

“I protect the community from violators who pose a danger on our roads. I saw a problem and I’m helping to solve it.”

He added that he receives threats daily on his social media, but he will continue to perform his national duty.

Saudi Arabia is considered one of the most dangerous countries to drive in following rising numbers of car accidents.

Dakhil said that traffic police respond to his reports, and that he has a portfolio of all the violations he sees daily. He stressed that the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 is based on everyone’s cooperation with the government to make the country move forward. — Al Arabiya English
