DAMMAM — Under new directives from the Ministry of Education, Saudi cultural attachés in various countries have set new mechanisms to monitor the performance of scholarship students for determining the excellence awards.

The new reward system has different criteria to evaluate the performance of the students in bachelor’s, master’s and PhD programs.

The mechanism included an increase in the number of credit hours during each semester. It also underlined the importance of documenting the quarterly results with available data provided by each university, Al-Hayat newspaper reported.

The cultural attaché in Japan said, “Bachelor’s students must study not less than 15 hours in each semester, and the student receives one month’s pay if the quarterly GPA is 4 out of 4 as per the university’s official marking system. If the GPA is 3 out of 4, the student will receive half a month’s pay.”

If the number of credit hours in a semester is not less than 12 hours and the quarterly GPA is 3.5 out of 4, the student will receive a month’s salary as reward. If the GPA data is not recorded in the mark sheet, the university has to furnish a letter detailing the academic performance of the student. The student will have to submit a request for the reward through the website Safeer with all documents and the number of credit hours.

The cultural attachés in Canada and Australia informed the students of the need to strictly follow the instructions to receive the excellence reward.

The cultural attaché in the UK also announced the excellence award for bachelor’s students, stressing that the GPA should not be less than 60 points throughout the study. Meanwhile, the cultural attaché in New Zealand has sent an alert to the visa applicants, noting that those wishing to study in the country must obtain a student’s visa before leaving the Kingdom to avoid interruption of their studies.

The cultural attaché in Canada has advised the students to apply for the renewal of the residence permit, which an application to extend the stay in Canada as a student, at least 30 days before the expiry date. The attaché pointed out that a residence permit could not be extended if the passport has expired.
