LONDON — Manchester United weathered an early Tottenham storm to come from behind to win 2-1 and reach a 20th FA Cup final at Wembley Saturday.

Goals from Alexis Sanchez and Ander Herrera cancelled out Dele Alli's opener and ensured that Tottenham's decade-long wait for a trophy continues.

"We want to win trophies, we have the staff that want to win. We can't keep doing this," said Alli. "We can't throw it away. We have got to improve."

Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino played down the importance of winning his first silverware as a coach to back up four years of undoubted progress at Tottenham beforehand, claiming it "wouldn't change their lives".

However, Spurs started like the side determined to make a statement.

Just 11 minutes in Davinson Sanchez's long ball picked out Christian Eriksen perfectly as Paul Pogba failed to track the Danish midfielder's run down the right.

And his cross was inch-perfect for Alli to apply the finishing touch for his 13th goal of the season.

"We were dominant from the first minute and it only looked to be going one way," added Alli. "We let ourselves down, it's very disappointing."

In contrast to Spurs' long wait for silverware, United is into a third final in less than two years under Jose Mourinho having won the League Cup and Europa League last season.

And Herrera hailed the winning mentality instilled by the Portuguese coach.

"We are in another final and we're getting used to being in finals," said Herrera as United look ahead to a final against either Chelsea or Southampton. "This club is all about titles and finals."

Spurs failed to make the most of their early dominance as after going in front Eriksen scuffed wide from Harry Kane's layoff before the England striker just couldn't reach Son's viscous in-swinging cross at the back post.

Pogba has been a figure of frustration all season for Mourinho, who has often left the £89 million ($125 million) Frenchman on the sidelines.

Mourinho said Pogba had shown what he is capable of in Wednesday's 2-0 win at Bournemouth after being substituted just four days earlier in a shock 1-0 home defeat to West Brom that handed Manchester City the Premier League title.

And having showed the side of his game that Mourinho detests for Spurs' opener, Pogba demonstrated his combination of physical power and technical ability as he outmuscled Mousa Dembele before delivering a pin-point cross for Sanchez to head home just his third United goal.

Both sides were unfortunate to not take the lead in the dying moments of a captivating first 45 minutes as firstly Michel Vorm got fingertips to a deflected long-range strike from Pogba.

At the other end, Eric Dier then drove against the base of the post with David de Gea unmoved.

Kane had the first chance of the second period, but saw his shot blocked behind by Chris Smalling as Spurs again started on the front foot.

But, once more, they were hit by a sucker punch when Sanchez's ball across the face of the area fell perfectly for Herrera arriving late from midfield and, despite going in the middle of the goal, his low effort beat Vorm, who was slow to react down to his right.

Spurs will likely seal their place in the Champions League for a third successive season in the coming weeks as Pochettino's proof that progress is being made.

However, with their only three defeats of 2018 all coming at Wembley against the toughest of opposition in Juventus, Man City and now United, questions remain over Pochettino's ability to turn Tottenham into trophy winners.

Salah scores again but Liverpool drops point

Jurgen Klopp saw Mohamed Salah set yet another Liverpool goalscoring record in his extraordinary season but the painful loss of two points in a 2-2 draw away to West Bromwich Albion left the manager less than enthusiastic about his afternoon at The Hawthorns Saturday.

Salah scored Liverpool's second goal as they amassed what looked like a commanding 2-0 lead against the Premier League's bottom club, taking his tally for the season to 41 in 46 games across all competitions and equaling the Liverpool record for the most goals in a Premier League campaign — 31 scored by Luis Suarez four years ago.

Klopp also saw Danny Ings score his first goal since October 2015 to make it 1-0 but, after conceding two late goals to West Brom and with an eye on Tuesday's Champions League semifinal first leg with Roma, the Liverpool boss was in no mood to celebrate yet another achievement from the Egyptian.

"Of course I was happy for him," said Klopp. "But like Mo, first of all we all want to win football games. That's why I would have loved to talk about this little detail if we won the game but we didn't."

Watford and Crystal Palace continued to inch toward Premier League safety after a scrappy goalless draw at Vicarage Road Saturday that means the home side have taken just two points from a possible 18.

Palace hit the post twice and Watford once but neither side really deserved to win with Watford edging the first half, in which keeper Wayne Hennessey had to be at his sharpest to prevent an own goal from Joel Ward, and Palace piling on the pressure after the break.

Wolves bags title as Sunderland relegated

Wolverhampton Wanderers sealed the second-tier Championship title in style by routing relegation-threatened Bolton Wanderers 4-0 at Molineux Saturday.

On a day when the goals rattled in, Wolves won the division for the second time in 10 years, but there was misery for Sunderland which was relegated for the second straight season.

The playoff fight looks likely to go down to the wire with seven teams scrapping for the two remaining slots alongside Aston Villa, which beat managerless Ipswich Town 4-0, and whichever of Fulham and Cardiff City do not go up automatically.

Middlesbrough's 2-1 win over rival Derby County means it needs just four points from its final two games to secure a playoff slot but Bristol City's chances were not helped by an extraordinary 5-5 draw with Hull City, a game it twice led by two goals but required an injury-time strike to salvage a point.

Brentford are well-placed to grab the final playoff slot after beating west London rivals Queens Park Rangers 2-1, a game in which they also missed a penalty.

At the other end Sunderland was relegated for the second consecutive season after Liam Boyce gave Burton Albion a late 2-1 victory that boosted its own survival hopes.

Birmingham was also lifted by a 2-1 comeback win over Sheffield United, a result that probably ended the Blades' playoff hopes. — Agencies
