RIYADH - Prince Muhammad Bin Nawaf, Saudi ambassador to the United Kingdom, reiterated that Qatar should improve relations with neighboring countries and desist from backing extremism, terrorism and regional destabilization.
Prince Nawaf's remarks were a rejoinder to an article published in The Financial Times titled “Qatar Siege is meaningless”.
The Saudi ambassador made these remarks in a joint letter issued by the ambassadors of four states calling to fight terror.
The other three ambassadors who signed the joint letter are Sheikh Fawaz Bin Mohammed Al Khalifa of Bahrain, UAE Ambassador Suleiman Al-Mazrui and the Egyptian Ambassador Nasser Kamil.
“The governments of anti-terror quartet countries -- Saudi Arabia, UAE, Egypt and Bahrain -- do not like to reduce Qatar to a vassal state, as the editorial comment claims. However, they envision Qatar to abide by international norms pertaining to combating terrorism,” the letter stated, according to the Saudi Press Agency.
The ambassadors also noted that Sheikh Tamim of Qatar made remarks to the media following a meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House on April 11 in which he claimed that his country does not tolerate persons who fund and back terrorism, nonetheless, within two days of the Qatari emir’s comments, the Qatari premier attended a wedding hosted by Abdulrahman Al-Naeimi, classified as a terrorism financier. The US Treasury Department also said that Al-Naeimi had overseen transfers of $2 million per month to Al-Qaeda network in Iraq, the letter pointed out.
Al-Naeimi is among a lot of terrorism financiers who are regularly doing such acts from Qatar. They keep moving freely and unpunished in a stark example of systematic support for terrorists, the letter said, adding that Qatar misused its media network to back up and promote terrorists’ acts in the whole region by relaying Houthi militia’s calls to launch attacks on Saudi Arabia.
“Qatar says something to the Western capitals, but it does the contrary,” the letter said.
