IEP-SAC Technical Seminar on hazards of electricity successful

RIYADH — “Electricity plays a very important role in modern life and is extensively used by everyone. There are some serious risks and hazards also associated with the use of electrical supply system, equipment and devices if proper protective measures are not followed. Understanding the situation and taking some common-sense measures can greatly reduce the gravity of the situation,” said Dr. Nazar H. Malik at the annual seminar arranged by the Institution of Engineers Pakistan, Saudi Arabian Center on the topic, ”Hazards of Electricity for Humans and Safety Measures” at King Salman Social Centre, Riyadh.

Local engineering firms displayed their products and provided information about their services in the exhibition area of the center. The exhibition stalls were attended by the chief guest of the event, Mahmoud Lateef, community welfare attaché at Pakistan Embassy, and a number of engineers from Pakistan and other nationalities.

Proceedings started with the recitation of verses from the Holy Qur’an by Engr. Asim Siddiqui. Engr. Iqbal Ahmed, general secretary of IEP-SAC, conducted the proceedings. Engr. Rizwan Ahmed, chairman of Eastern Sub-center, presented the annual report of his sub-center for 2017-18.

General Secretary Engr. Iqbal Ahmed outlined the activities of IEP-SAC for 2017-18, which included arrangement of technical seminars, publication of Engineering Journal, arrangement of family picnic and interaction with other sister organizations. He said the group attained a new milestone in providing on-merit scholarships to needy students in 12 Engineering Universities and colleges in Pakistan.

Convener of the Technical Committee Engr. Sh. Asrar Ahmed introduced the keynote speaker Dr. Nazr H. Malik. Dr. Nazar has been associated with Electrical Engineering Dept. of King Saud University since 1982 and has authored more than 220 conference/journal papers and 4 books.

In his presentation, he highlighted the hazards posed by electricity and the situations that cause life threatening injuries, the initiation of fires and arcs and the associated damages. He said, “When one is close to high voltage power network installations there are risks associated with step and touch potentials and electromagnetic fields.” He elaborated on the risks associated with the extended use of mobile phones and the exposure to radio frequencies and microwave radiations. Some common techniques and measures to prevent the exposures to such situations were also highlighted. The seminar presentation was followed by Q/A session conducted by Engr. Sh. Asrar Ahmed.

The chief guest commended the performance of IEP-SAC, particularly noting the scholarship program of IEP-SAC, and expressed his good wishes for success in future. He applauded the scholarly presentation by Dr. Nazar Malik. He said that Pakistani Embassy has been actively working with local authorities and firms for the placement of Pakistani work force in the new multi-billion-dollar projects.

IEP-SAC Chairman Engr. Kirmani expressed his appreciation and thanks to the ambassador of Pakistan and embassy staff for their continued patronage. He urged Pakistani engineers to exercise their utmost skills and abilities in assisting the Vision 2030 program chalked out by the Kingdom.

Shields and Certificates were distributed to the keynote speaker, chief guest and a number of council members and sponsors in appreciation of their outstanding contribution. — SG
