JEDDAH — Jeddah will play host to the World Boxing Super Series super-middleweight final on Sept. 28 at Al-Jawhara Stadium (King Abdullah Sports City).

The first ever to be held in Saudi Arabia the bout will be between George Groves in his third WBA title defense against Callum Smith who will be challenging his first-ever world title fight.

The winner will walk away with the Muhammad Ali Trophy and will receive $10 million.

This boxing match comes following an agreement signed in London between World Boxing Super Series organizer and owner Comosa AG and The General Sports Authority of Saudi Arabia.

Commenting during the signing agreement a few months back, Turki Al-Alsheikh, President of The General Sports Authority, said: “This agreement is part of our broader commitment and works to develop the sport of boxing in Saudi Arabia. Having the first final of such a high profile and groundbreaking tournament take place in Saudi Arabia is a key milestone for us, and will be one of many major sports events to take place in the Kingdom next year.”

Roberto Dalmiglio, CEO of Comosa: “This is fantastic news, not just for World Boxing Super Series but for boxing and for the sport in Saudi Arabia.”

As the match was announced to be held in Saudi Arabia, Groves told reporters: “I’m incredibly excited that the fight has been formally confirmed to take place in Jeddah. I’m excited and sure this final will eclipse every WBSS fight to date for excitement and drama. I have been in camp for a while already but am now looking forward to stepping the training up now that the date’s been set.”

On the other side, Smith is also excited that the event will take place in Saudi Arabia. He told reporters: “I am excited to be part of such a big night of boxing. It began with the red carpet treatment (at the competition draw) in Monaco and will end with more of the same in Jeddah.”
