TORONTO — Jesus Duenas and Tigres U.A.N.L. of Liga MX silenced the home crowd at BMO Field in Toronto on Wednesday, claiming a 3-1 victory over Toronto FC in the inaugural Campeones Cup.

Duenas tallied twice for Tigres, first after getting behind the defense on a run from the wing in the 36th minute, and again with a rocket from outside the box in the 64th minute, striking a bouncing ball from a corner kick into the bottom left corner.

Two minutes after Duenas' second goal, Toronto defender Eriq Zavaleta made it 3-0 by accidentally deflecting a pass into his own net. Toronto got on the board late with a penalty kick converted by Lucas Janson in the 86th minute.

The event was announced in March as an annual battle between the most recent champions of the North America's top soccer leagues. Toronto FC won the 2017 MLS Cup last December, and Tigres won Liga MX's Campeones de Campeones in July.

Union come West, end

Sounders' winning streak

Fabrice-Jean Picault scored in second-half stoppage time as the short-handed Philadelphia Union put an end to the host Seattle Sounders' record winning streak with a 1-0 victory Wednesday night. The Sounders (13-10-5, 44 points) had won nine straight games, an MLS record in the post-shootout era, and were undefeated in their previous 12 matches.

Seattle goalkeeper Stefan Frei's outlet pass intended for Gustav Svensson in the third of six minutes of stoppage time was stolen by Picault just outside the 18-yard box. Picault dribbled into the penalty area and beat Frei between the legs from about 12 yards out.

The Union (13-12-4, 43 points) had gone a man down in the 89th minute when defender Jack Elliott was sent off after receiving his second yellow card of the match. Philadelphia goalkeeper Andre Blake made four saves for his ninth shutout of the season. Frei also made four stops.

The Union's Cory Burke appeared to break the scoreless tie in the 65th minute when he took a through ball from Haris Medunjanin at the top of the 6-yard box on the right side and blasted it past Frei and just inside the right post. But a video review determined Burke was offside on the play. The Sounders had chances early, hitting the right post twice in the opening 16 minutes.

Midfielder Victor Rodriguez couldn't get a foot on a cross from Nicolas Lodeiro in the eighth minute, but the ball made its way to Raul Ruidiaz near the end line, with his sharp-angle shot glancing off the post.

Rodriguez unleashed a 20-yard shot in the 16th minute that struck high off the right post and ricocheted right back to Blake. Blake also made a strong save after Ruidiaz took a long cross from Svensson, also in the 16th minute, tipping the ball over the crossbar on a shot from 15 yards out.

Ruidiaz, whose first appearance with the Sounders coincided with the start of their winning streak, suffered a right ankle sprain in the 29th minute and was replaced five minutes later by Will Bruin.

Atlanta United overtakes

Quakes with late comeback

In what could be construed as one of the most controversial MLS games of the year, Atlanta United topped the San Jose Earthquakes 4-3 Wednesday night in San Jose, Calif. Atlanta (18-5-6, 60 points) — the best team in the MLS — traveled west to take on San Jose (4-17-8, 20 points) — the worst team in the league -- in what figured to be another victory for the visitors.

It was, but not until a bizarre final 20 minutes. San Jose led 3-1 before an apparent goal from Chris Wondolowski was disallowed. Instead, following a video review, a penalty kick was awarded to Atlanta for a hand ball that happened 90 seconds earlier.

Josef Martinez converted his MLS-record 29th goal of the season to cut it the deficit to 3-2 in the 70th minute. Miguel Almiron tied the game three minutes later when knocked home a loose ball in the box. Martinez added a goal five minutes into second-half stoppage time to complete the contentious win.

It was an inspired effort for the Earthquakes. Two days earlier, San Jose fired coach Mikael Stahre and replaced him on an interim basis by Steve Ralston. Leading 2-1 at the half, San Jose made it 3-1 in the 58th minute on a Valeri Qazaishvili goal.

San Jose stunned Atlanta in the 13th minute when Nick Lima headed home a cross from Shea Salinas for the 1-0 lead. Lima was left unmarked at the back post.

The Earthquakes added on with two minutes left in the first half. Danny Hoesen had a one-on-one with Atlanta goalie Brad Guzan stopped, but the San Jose forward got the rebound, beat a pair of Atlanta defenders and scored. Atlanta cut the deficit in half in first-half stoppage time when Hector Villalba converted a pass from Julian Gressel to make it 2-1 at the break.

Clark helps Timbers

topple Crew, 3-2

Steve Clark made four of his six saves in the first half to beat his former team for the second time this season — with two different teams — as the Portland Timbers downed the visiting Columbus Crew 3-2 at Providence Park on Wednesday.

After Niko Hansen scored in the seventh minute for Columbus (12-9-8, 44 points), David Guzman tied it in the 18th off an assist by Andy Polo. Polo made it 2-1 in the 37th minute, and an own goal in the 48th minute doubled the lead for the Timbers (13-8-8, 47).

Hansen scored again in the third minute of stoppage time for the final margin. Clark, who lost to Portland in the 2015 MLS Cup as a member of the Crew, made five saves for D.C. United in a 1-0 win over Columbus 1-0 on April 14.

With the Timbers being outplayed despite a 1-1 deadlock, he made his fourth save of the match in the 36th minute with a parry of a blistering 19-yard strike by Artur, and a minute later the Timbers had the lead.

Polo made a run from the top of the defensive box down the right side before crossing the ball and getting it back. Polo's centering header came off Crew defender Milton Valenzuela and back to Polo, who used a karate kick at the right post to score his first goal in his 18th MLS match. The Timbers made it 3-1 when Samuel Armenteros' shot deflected off Crew defender Lalas Abubakar.

The Crew's early goal should have been a good sign. Columbus was 3-0-0 when scoring first on the road, while Portland was winless in nine games overall (0-5-4) when facing a 1-0 deficit.

Hansen scored from 8 yards with Valenzuela assisting for his third career goal. His first came in his MLS debut March 25, 2017, vs. Portland, and was the winner in the 84th minute. — Reuters
