CHICAGO —

Roger Federer and Alexander Zverev won clutch singles matches as Team Europe beat Team World 13-8 to retain the Laver Cup on the third and final day of action in the international tournament in Chicago Sunday.

Federer’s hardfought 6-7(5), 7-6(8), 10-7 victory over American John Isner put the Europeans just three points from their victory target and Zverev got them there with a 6-7(3), 7-5, 10-7 win over Kevin Anderson.

On Sunday, John McEnroe’s Team World had taken its first lead of the tournament at 8-7 after the opening doubles when Sock and Isner slipped past Federer and Zverev 4-6 7-6(2) 11-9.

Grigor Dimitrov, David Goffin and Kyle Edmund were the other members of the triumphant team led by Swedish great Bjorn Borg.

Thiem wins title

Top seed Dominic Thiem of Austria beat Slovakia’s Martin Klizan 6-3, 6-1 to secure his third ATP title of the season in the Saint Petersburg Open Sunday.

This was the pair’s fourth meeting with 25-year-old Thiem capturing his 11th ATP trophy.

Simon bags 14th crown

French veteran Gilles Simon overcame a shaky opening set on his way to winning a 14th career singles title with a 7-6 (7/2), 6-1 win over German qualifier Matthias Bachinger in Metz.

Simon, ranked 39th in the world, came up against Bachinger Sunday after the German, ranked 166th in the world, had stunned Japan’s top seed Kei Nishikori in the semifinals.

Australia’s top two brushed aside their first-round opponents at the Wuhan Open Monday, with straight-sets victories in the $2.7-million tournament for both Ashleigh Barty and Daria Gavrilova.

Barty downed Britain’s Johanna Konta 7-5, 6-4 to progress. Gavrilova caused the biggest upset of the Wuhan Open so far, dumping out 10th-seed and last year’s French Open winner Jelena Ostapenko 6-2, 6-4.

In other matches on Monday, Madison Keys of the US defeated China’s Wang Yafan, and 14th-seed Garbine Muguruza eased past Belgium’s Alison Van Uytvanck 6-4, 6-0.

An ankle injury forced American Coco Vandeweghe to retire in the third set against Donna Vekic.

Estonian Anett Kontaveit recovered from a set and a break down to beat ninth seed Sloane Stephens 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 Sunday.

Earlier, Russian 13th seed Daria Kasatkina beat Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko for the first time in her career to reach round two.

Kasatkina won 6-4, 7-5 and will face either Bernarda Pera or Chinese qualifier Wang Xiyu next.

Wang’s compatriot Zhang Shuai beat Australian Samantha Stosur 6-2 6-2. — Agencies
