JEDDAH
— The investigation bureau of the General Authority for Civil Aviation (GACA) last year received 628 complaints about aviation security threats including 123 cases of birds colliding with aircraft, the Arabic daily Al-Watan reported on Tuesday.

GACA said the complaints included three accidents, 492 dangerous events including 28 serious ones and 105 operational issues that are not considered aviation issues.

The bureau said cases of birds colliding with the aircraft in air constituted a serious threat to aviation security in Saudi airspace.

According to a report issued by the authority, the bureau conducted 61 investigations, issued 49 reports and made 26 recommendations of which 25 were related to the air safety.

GACA said it had made a comprehensive study to curb the hazards posed by birds to the aircraft and also made another study to prevent aircraft coming close to each other in air.

It said its safety program (SSP Implementation) had made a remarkable rise in the achievements from 54 percent to 96 percent.

The authority said it has updated its quality system of management and launched an electronic program to receive complaints (5Q) from all the airline companies and service providers.

It said the program was concerned with all non-military security tasks at airports.

The authority announced that it has started implementing the integrated national project for the safety and protection of airports. The program will cover all engineering buildings, the basic infrastructure, communications and others.

GACA said it had approved the security requirements of airline companies working in 22 airports.

The authority said it granted licenses to open 98 new cargo agencies and renewed the licenses of 124 others.
