JEDDAH —
The General Authority of Meteorology and Environmental Protection in Makkah region intensified inspections along the Jeddah Corniche to prevent various kinds of violations, especially pollution of the environment.

Inspection teams found at least six violations during their inspection of more than 10 marinas on the Corniche.

The violations included dumping of hazardous waste such as oil and diesel emitted by boats and beach buggies.

The raids were carried out in line with a directive from Khaleel Al-Thaqafi, president of the authority.

Abdullah Al-Salami, deputy director of the authority in Makkah region, said that dumping of the oil and diesel waste into the sea is an explicit violation of the General Environment Law.

“The authority wants companies to submit contracts concluded with the competent authorities with regard to disposal of hazardous waste or sewage in line with the set requirements of the authority,” he said.

Al-Salami said the inspection teams will continue monitoring all the installations and marinas on the seacoasts of Jeddah and other cities in the Kingdom in order to ensure that they are in compliance with environmental requirements and standards.
