Italian Language Week starts in Jeddah

— Under the aegis of the president of the Republic of Italy, the Italian Consulate General here marked the opening night of “The 18th Week of the Italian Language in the World”, at the Italian Cultural Center recently.

The occasion started with a conference titled: “Language, Newspaper, Storytelling. Words and graphics in a digital world,” run by the speakers: Adriano Attus, the creative director at the Italian newspaper Sole 24 Ore and Frank Kane, a writer with Arab News, furthermore the conference was moderated by professor Leonardo Romei, vice dean at the JCA in the University of Business and Technology.

At the conference, they discussed several topics related to the history and the developments of journalism and its effect over the Italian history.

Later on, the Italian consulate in cooperation with the Embassy of Switzerland concluded the evening with a Swiss movie that was produced in the Italian language “Finding Camille”.

Italian Consul General, Elisabetta Martini stressed: “In the framework of the Italian Language Week in Jeddah, we were happy to present two Italian distinguished speakers who have highlighted the influence of the digital world into language and journalism, from a graphic and linguistic point of view. The first contribution, by Adriano Attus, will focus on Language, newspaper, storytelling. From paper as only medium, we are now in an advanced multimedia environment.

“The second contribution, by Dr. Cristina Greco, aims to propose a reflection on the use of Italian language in everyday life, pinpointing on main questions on how people reach Italian language and how the Italian reaches people nowadays. Looking at some examples, from the social networks to the digital graphic novels, the contribution explores phenomena. They both intervened at UBT University, Dar Al Hekma, the Italian cultural center, and the Italian school.”

Adriano Attus told Saudi Gazette: “For us, the Italian language week in the world is very important to spread our culture and to mix with foreign friends.”

The “Italian Language Week in the world” is an initiative by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, an annual occasion, celebrated by Italian diplomatic missions all over the world to highlight the beauty of Italian language and culture.
