LONDON —
France and Croatia have both named their teams for next week’s Davis Cup final in Lille — the last before the format of the 118-year-old team event is changed next year.
Holders France, bidding to win back-to-back titles for the first time since the 1930s, are without their three top-ranked players, which means world No. 32 Lucas Pouille will shoulder the singles burden at the Stade Pierre Mauroy.
Captain Yannick Noah is without injured Richard Gasquet, Gael Monfils and Gilles Simon but Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, ranked down at 261 after injuries is included. Jeremy Chardy and top-20 doubles players Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut complete the line-up.
Croatia captain Zeljko Krajan is able to name a full-strength lineup with world No. 7 Marin Cilic and Borna Coric, ranked a career-high 12th, leading their charge. Franko Skugor, Mate Pavic and stalwart Ivan Dodig complete the Croatian team who are trying to win the Davis Cup for the Balkan nation for only the second time after their 2005 title.
Croatia won the most recent clash between the nations, 3-2 in the 2016 semifinals. Next year a revamped Davis Cup will feature an 18-nation finals week in Madrid in November.
Noah said thathe will not name a replacement for Gasquet after the world No. 26 pulled out of the final due to injury. The 58-year-old has also selected Benoit Paire and Julien Benneteau as reserves in the event of a late withdrawal.
France hold 10 Davis Cup titles and will defend their 2017 crown against a Croatia team that has triumphed only once, in 2005.
“Croatia coach Zeljko Krajan remained loyal to the players who secured victory in the semifinal against the United States,” said a statement. The 21-year-old Coric secured Croatia’s 3-2 sem-final victory after beating Davis Cup debutant Frances Tiafoe in the decisive match.
It will be Croatia’s third final after winning the 2005 title and losing in 2016 to Argentina. Last year, the French beat Belgium in the final to claim their 10th crown. In 2014 they lost to a Swiss team led by Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka. The meeting is a repeat of the football World Cup final in July in Moscow, which France won, 4-2. — Agencies
