LONDON — Neymar scored a contested second-half penalty to give Brazil a 1-0 friendly win over Uruguay and bring some joy to their fans on a gloomy Friday at the Emirates Stadium in London.

The forward was again the stand-out Brazil player and he coolly side-footed home his 60th international goal in the 76th minute after Diego Laxalt brought down Danilo, although Uruguay claimed there was a handball in the build-up.

Until then Brazil had looked the more vulnerable of the two sides with Alisson making three fine saves, including a superb stop from a Luis Suarez free kick early in the second half.

It was Brazil's fifth win in a row since they were knocked out of this year's World Cup in the quarterfinals by Belgium.

There was no lack of commitment, however, as niggly tackles flew in a clash that featured eight yellow cards, including one for Luis Suarez who thought Uruguay should have been given a handball against Danilo before he was felled in the box.

The South American powerhouses continue their European dates next Tuesday, when Brazil play Cameroon in Milton Keynes and Uruguay take on world champions France in Paris.

Goal in each half gives Argentina win over Mexico

A first-half header from defender Ramiro Funes Mori and a second half own goal from substitute Isaac Brizuela gave Argentina a 2-0 win over Mexico in a friendly in Cordoba on Friday.

The Villareal center half opened the scoring a minute before half time when he got his head to a Paulo Dybala free kick as Mexican defenders stood back and watched.

Then Brizuela, who had replaced Miguel Layun only three minutes earlier, put through his own net eight minutes from time to seal a deserved win for the home side. Argentina and Mexico meet again in Mendoza on Tuesday.

Late Luongo strike gives Australia draw with S. Korea

Australia midfielder Massimo Luongo scored a stoppage-time equalizer to earn a 1-1 draw with South Korea in an entertaining friendly at a rain-drenched Lang Park in Brisbane on Saturday.

Hwang Ui-jo's 22nd minute goal for the visitors against the run of play had looked like winning the re-match of the 2015 Asian Cup final, when the Socceroos won the title they will defend in the United Arab Emirates early next year.

The home side laid siege to the South Korea goal as the seconds ticked away, however, and Luongo — player of the tournament four years ago — was on hand to tap the ball into the net after a goalmouth scramble.

Korean defender Kim Min-jae launched a long pass out of defense which caught Trent Sainsbury flat-footed and Hwang was able to race onto the ball and take his time before burying it in the bottom left-hand corner of the net.

The Socceroos continued to press forward but without the verve of their earlier attacks and the South Koreans managed to take their lead into the break quite comfortably.

Neither midfielder Koo Ja-cheol or goalscorer Hwang made it to halftime, though, with both taken off the pitch on stretchers in the space of a couple of minutes.

Martin Boyle was handed his first appearance for a country he had never visited until this week as a late substitute and the Scotland-born winger played a part in Australia's equalizer.

Tom Rogic rifled a shot through a crowd of players from the edge of the box that goalkeeper Kim Seung-Gyu was only able to parry into Boyle's path with Luongo pouncing to tap the loose ball into an empty net.

Vietnam maintain perfect start with win over Malaysia

Vietnam maintained their perfect start to the 2018 Asean Football Federation Championship on Friday as Park Hang-seo's side beat Malaysia 2-0 at Hanoi's My Dinh Stadium.

Nguyen Cong Phuong and Nguyen Anh Duc found the back of the net for the Vietnamese, who move level in Group A on six points from two games with Myanmar at the top of the standings after Antoine Hey's team came back from a goal down to defeat Laos 3-1.

Malaysia also have six points but have played one game more. The top two nations in the five-team group qualify for the semi-finals. Vietnam followed up a comfortable opening-round win over Laos last week with another solid performance against a Malaysia side that had defeated Cambodia and Laos in their opening fixtures. — Reuters
