Sharp rise in settlement of commercial disputes

Saudi commercial courts and panels witnessed a 158 percent increase in the number of rulings issued in October compared to the same period last year, the Ministry of Justice reported.

It said there was also an 80 percent increase in new cases during the month.

The commercial courts issued a total of 3,046 rulings last month with an average of 138 verdicts per day.

Final judgments accounted for 96 percent of the rulings, while procedural ones constituted only 4 percent.

According to the ministry’s monthly report, 89 percent of rulings were issued by courts in Riyadh, Makkah and the Eastern Province.

The Riyadh Region topped the list with 1,244 rulings, followed by Makkah with 950, the Eastern Province with 532, Madinah with 106 and Qassim with 76.

A total of 3,594 cases were received by commercial courts and panels during the month, which is 80 percent more than their number during the same period last year.

Cases on disputes of insolvency, brokerage and sole dealership accounted for 47 percent of the cases; sale, leasing and procurement, 32 percent; and contracting and commercial agencies, 12 percent.

The daily number of new cases ranged from 72 and 439 with an average of 163 cases per day. About 86 percent of the cases originated in Riyadh, Makkah and the Eastern Province.
