RIYADH – More than 40,000 driver licenses has been issued to women in Saudi Arabia since the ban on women driving was lifted on June 24, Director General of Traffic Department Maj. Gen. Muhammad Al-Bassami told Okaz.

“The experience of women driving in the Kingdom is considered pioneering and exemplary,” he added Tuesday after meeting directors of traffic departments.

He pointed out that the women driving schools partners with us in implementing international standard that we seek to apply in those schools and applying quality in the issuance of licenses for women.

“We have plans to create 14 driving schools for women in different regions to help ease the waiting list for women to get the license,” he said. “We have opened 22 centers to replace international valid licenses,” he added.

On the possibility of revising the fine of the violation of mobile use during driving, which is SR500, he replied: “We are an executive.”

As for the date of implementing the traffic points system, he explained that the Supreme Order guarantees a two-year period for driving schools.

“When they are ready, we will start applying the points and the drivers will be returned to the schools for rehabilitation.”
