8 teams compete in inter-university translation contest

RIYADH — With the support of Prince Sultan University, the Translation and Authoring Center (TAC) organized the 6th inter-university translation competition. Vice Rector of Women’s College Dr. Reemah Al-Yahya, representatives of the participant universities and a large number of guests interested in translation were present.

Riyad Bank sponsored the competition for the fourth time.

Eight universities competed in two tracks of the contest — oral and written translation.

The participating teams were from King Saud University, Princess Nourah University, Imam Muhammad Bin Saud Islamic University, Prince Sultan University, Prince Sattam Bin Abdulaziz University, University of Jeddah, University of Hail and Imam Abdurrahman Bin Faisal University.

A translation exhibition accompanied the event with 14 centers and universities concerned with languages and translation participating.

In addition to the participating universities, King Abdullah Institute for Translation and Arabization, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz International Center for Arabic Language, Arabic Language Teaching Institute for Non-Arabic Speakers, Al-Shegrey Library, Traajim and Prince Sultan University Library were among the participants of the exhibit.

After the competition that lasted for almost six hours, the winners were announced by the judges and honored by Vice Rector Al-Yahya, who also honored the participating centers in the exhibition and Riyad Bank for their continuous support.

The winners of the consecutive interpretation track were Prince Sultan University (first place), University of Jeddah (second place) and King Saud University (third place). The winners of the written track were University of Jeddah (first place), Princess Nourah University (second place) and King Saud University (third place). All the winners were presented with certificates and plaques.

Prince Sultan University was inaugurated in 1999 by the late Crown Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz, who was then deputy prime minister, minister of defense and aviation and inspector general.

The university established by the Al-Riyadh Philanthropic Society for Science (RPSS) under the auspices of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman when he was the Emir of Riyadh Region and chairman of the Board of Directors of the RPSS. The university was the brainchild of Riyadh›s business community. It was dedicated to Prince Sultan to celebrate his homecoming after successful medical treatment abroad.
