DAMMAM —
About 84 percent of accidents on the Kingdom’s roads are caused by motorists who ignore the systems and rules of careful driving, the Arabic language daily Makkah reported on Sunday quoting a study conducted by the Vision Center for Social Studies.

The study said about 64 percent of the accidents are caused by excessive speed while 54 percent by jumping the red light.

According to the study, a 1 percent decrease of speed will reduce the chances of accidents by about 5 percent.

It said the conditions of the roads come at the top of engineering causes of accidents while the condition of the car itself comes in the second place.

The study found that air bags and safety belts reduced the adverse effects of accidents and mitigate the severity of injuries.
