HAIL –
A Saudi family repaid the love and affection of a Yemeni worker, who worked for the family for over five decades, by organizing a condolence meeting for him on his death.

Hassan Ayish, 70, recently died of cardiac arrest while picking dates in the family’s farm. Ayish has had a long association with the family as he grew up with its members and was considered and loved by all as a family member.

Speaking to Arabiya.net, Fahd Al-Khuzam, sponsor of the Yemeni worker Hassan Ayish, said: “Amm Hassan (Uncle Hassan) came to Saudi Arabia in 1970 (corresponding to 1390H). He was working with Ibrahim Khuzam (our father) in his farm. His monthly salary at that time was SR75. After the end of date harvesting, Hassan used to return to his family in Yemen. He would come back to Hail at the beginning of the season. He loved Hail and refused to work elsewhere.”

He added: “He had a good reputation and whoever met him liked him. He was well known in Hail Region. They called him Hassan Al-Khuzam, hence considering him to be one of the members of Al-Khuzam family. He had one routine — from home, to the farm and then to the mosque. He would go to bed early.”

“We considered him as our father after our father’s death in 1976 (1396 Hijra). He commanded great respect from us,” Al-Khuzam said.

He further said: “The family held a condolences meeting after Amm Hassan’s burial. It was attended by large number of people including residents of Hail Region and members of the Yemeni community.”

“We asked him recently, if you die in Saudi Arabia what should we do? He replied that he be buried next to Amm Ibrahim. We fulfilled his wish and buried him next to our father. This is the least we could offer to Amm Hassan (may Allah Almighty have mercy on his soul),” he said.

“Amm Hassan Ayyash has one son and six daughters. We telephoned his son and informed him of their father’s death. He replied: My father is your father, so please fulfill his wish by burying him in Saudi Arabia. He sent a letter of attorney authorizing us to carry out the burial,” Al-Khuzam said.

As to Amm Hassan Ayish’s death, Fahd Al-Khuzam said: “Amm has six date palm trees, which he has kept as a charity for Allah’s sake. He used to distribute the fruit from the date palms to the needy. On the day he died, he left the house early in the morning as usual. He tied a rope to the palm tree and while picking the dates, he fell from the top.”

Fahd Al-Khuzam further said: “When one of my sisters went out to the farm, she found Amm Hassan lying on the ground. She telephoned us and we in turn called the Saudi Red Crescent. When Amm Hassan arrived at the hospital, he was already dead. Forensic doctor’s report said he had suffered a heart attack while he was on the palm tree.”

He said that they completed burial formalities in cooperation with the Yemeni embassy, the Yemeni Communities Office and the Emir’s Office in Hail Region.
