Kuwait Cabinet quits after disputes in parliament

November 14, 2019

KUWAIT CITY — Kuwait's prime minister submitted his resignation on Thursday along with his Cabinet, officials said, amid infighting between ministers and criticism of their performance.

Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Mubarak Al-Sabah "submitted the resignation of the Cabinet to the Emir... in order to allow for a Cabinet reshuffle," government spokesman Tareq Al-Mazrem said in a statement.

Minister of Finance Nayef Al-Hajraf and Minister of Public Works Jenan Bushehri resigned this month, with both under fire for alleged mismanagement of their portfolios and poor use of public funds.

On Tuesday, parliament also grilled Interior Minister Sheikh Khaled Al-Jarrah Al-Sabah over similar accusations.

Some elected lawmakers had accused Bushehri of failing to fix infrastructure and roads that were damaged in massive floods in 2018.

Ten lawmakers had filed a no-confidence motion against her, according to local media.

Bushehri had claimed, however, that the problems plaguing her ministry are long-running and argued she should not be held responsible for issues that precede her time as minister.

The government in Kuwait has resigned in the past, particularly when elected lawmakers are set to question or submit a no-confidence vote against senior government officials. — Agencies
