RIYADH — The Public Prosecution, in cooperation with the Absher portal, has launched a new electronic service that allows citizens and expatriates to seek redressal for rights violation of detainees. They can raise their complaints when they notice any violation of the rights guaranteed in the law for people who were under detention in connection with various cases.

Abdullah Al-Moqbil, undersecretary for prison supervision and enforcement of sentences at the Public Prosecution, said that the service, titled “Complaints regarding prisons and detention centers,” via the Absher came into force in the framework of the keenness of the Attorney General to develop one of the basic specializations of the Public Prosecution, which is overseeing prisons and detention centers in a way guaranteeing justice and safeguarding of rights.

Article 40 of the Criminal Procedure Law stipulates the right to inform the Public Prosecution by anyone who knows of a prisoner or one who is detained illegally or held at a place that is not designated for imprisonment or detention.

It is now possible to pass information to the Prison Supervision Department through the Absher portal about any detainee who has been denied his rights guaranteed to him by the law.

Subsequently, the competent official at the Public Prosecution will follow up on this information, move to the place where the prisoner or detainee is held, and conduct the necessary investigation and order his release if he discovers the imprisonment or detention is in violation of the concerned regulations.

He shall prepare a report thereof, and will submit it to the competent authorities to take action against the perpetrators, Al-Moqbil said while emphasizing that the Public Prosecution is moving forward in upgrading its monitoring role by enhancing transparency.

Meanwhile, Acting Director General of Information Technology at the Public Prosecution Sami Al-Osaimi said that the new service, under the slogan of “With you,” was launched at the branch of the Public Prosecution in the Eastern Province, and it will be expanded to all other branches during the coming period.

“This service is one of the digital transformation initiatives of the Public Prosecution aimed at diversifying channels of providing services to beneficiaries,” he said, adding that the Public Prosecution will launch a number of new electronic services in future through the Absher portal.
