Kuwait reports 83 new cases, raising total to 993

KUWAIT CITY — Kuwait reported on Friday 83 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 993, the Health Ministry said in a statement carried by Kuwait News Agency.

Out of the total 83 newly detected cases, two are Kuwaiti citizens who returned from Britain as part of the repatriation drive while 77 of them came into contact with infected patients and the cause of the infection for the other four cases is still under investigation, the statement said.

Among 77 cases of local transmission, 51 are Indians, 8 Pakistanis, 7 Bangladeshis, 5 Nepalis, 3 Egyptians and 1 each from Kuwait, Syria and the Philippines, the statement added.

Meanwhile, 869 patients are receiving treatment, including 26 in ICU with 16 of them in stable condition, the statement noted.

Earlier, Kuwaiti Minister of Health Bassel Al-Sabah announced the recovery of 12 patients from the coronavirus, bringing the total number of recoveries in the country to 123.

On April 4, Kuwait reported the first death from the deadly virus.

The Kuwaiti government has decided to impose a nationwide curfew to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

On March 13, Kuwait suspended all commercial flights. The government also decided to close stores, malls and barbershops. — Agencies
