RIYADH — Inter-School debate competition for both secondary and senior secondary levels for Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) affiliated Schools  was held at Al Yasmin International School here last week.



Dr Mohammed Ahmed Badshah, assistant professor at King Saud University, was the chief guest. Al Yasmin's school principal K Rahmathulla welcomed the gathering.



The debate topic for high school students was "Compulsion of parents to join some professional courses curbs the talents of their children."



This proposition was presented and well-argued by Al Yasmin participant Tarun Shaheed of grade 10, who opposed the motion and also bagged the trophy for the best speaker.



In the second debate for senior secondary level Arshia Mufti of International Indian School (IIS) clinched the best speaker's prize on the topic "Grading system is the most appropriate one for the proper assessment of students in the examinations."



Shahal Basharath of New Middle East School Riyadh and Sharon Gigy of Indian International School-Riyadh were the first and second runners up for the best speakers in the secondary level.



John Jojy of International Indian Public School and Aishwarya Krishna Puranic of Delhi Public School-Riyadh (DPS-R) secured the first and second runners up respectively for best speakers of senior secondary level.



The first three teams from secondary level — Al Yasmin, New Middle East, IISR — and from senior secondary level — IIPS, IIS and DPS-R — will represent the inter-school debate's final round scheduled on October 25 and 26.



The schools that took part in the competition were Al Aliya International School, DPS-R, Yara International School, IIS, IIPS, Modern International School, Al Yasmin, and International Indian School Buraida.



The panel of judges comprised Toastmaster Mohammad Ebrahim, Muhammad Hussain, HOD English Dept. Education, Sri Lankan School—Riyadh, and  Nona Anggraeni, English Teacher, Indonesian International School-Riyadh.



Miraj Muhammed Khan, principal of DPS, helmed the prize distribution ceremony. K.G Menon, vice principal of Al Yasmin, proposed the vote of thanks. — SG
