ONE of my friends who is a sports editor asked me to write about what some of our young men get up to these days. In fact, what some of them get up to is improper and something that I am sure many readers see when they go to malls. Many young men wear very short pants in public. In fact, the number of men who do that has increased of late. What is worse, some attend social events wearing short pants, a practice that contradicts our social traditions and norms.

Our religion urges us to dress modestly and to be modest in what we do and say. Shariah considers modesty as a branch of faith. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “There are some 60 or 70 branches of faith. The highest is to bear witness that there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. The lowest is the removal of harm from the road. Modesty is also of faith.”

The reason why modesty is connected with or considered an integral part of faith is because both modesty and faith are based on positive concepts. If you see men dressed improperly in public as if what they are doing is normal, then you should know that they are immodest and have no shame.

As Muslims, we must be modest in what we eat, say and do. We have to respect our fellow Muslims and others and imitate and emulate the actions and behavior of the Prophet (pbuh). We should also not be influenced by Western lifestyles and clothes.
