Dr. Intakhab Alam KhanMARRIAGE is extremely important in Islam. The Holy Qur’an says, “And marry those among you who are single and those who are fit among your male slaves and your female slaves; if they are needy, Allah will make them free from want out of His grace; and Allah is all Encompassing, all Knowing.” (Surah an-Nur, 24:32)

The above ayat begins with the words Wa Ankehoo (And marry…). The word “nikah” implies obligation, therefore, it is highly recommended. From the social perspective, marriage is a highly recommended act as it protects believers from falling into sin.

Emphasizing the importance of marriage in Islam, the last Prophet (peace be upon him) says, “No house has been built in Islam more beloved in the sight of Allah than through marriage.” The Holy Prophet (pbuh) continued, “The best people of my community are those who get married and have chosen their partners, and the worst people are those who are passing their lives as bachelors.”

One of the noble companions, Hadrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) declares, “Marry, because marriage is the tradition of the Prophet (pbuh).”

Advantages of a married life

Studies of different kinds have stated that marriages have many advantages and that married people remain healthier than those who are unmarried. Islam also regards marriage as a way to acquire spiritual attainments that brings a Muslim closer to his Creator. The Prophet (pbuh) said, “One who marries, has already followed half of his religion.” The advantages of marriage can better be understood by reading the noble saying of the Prophet (pbuh) when he announced, “Two rak’ats (cycles) prayed by a married person are better than the night-vigil and the fast of a single person.”

Why are people afraid of marriage?

Many people seem to be scared of marriage these days. They think that they will no longer be free if they marry. In addition, they think that they will be burdened by many responsibilities. Some women do not want to marry because they are afraid of divorce.

Some women do not marry again because they want to take care of their children from their first husband. There are also many women who cannot marry as they are daughters who want to take care of their lonely parents in the absence of sons in the family.

What are the reasons for divorce?

Many married couples are unable to maintain harmony and understanding. They fight over minor issues and never seem to try to resolve the issues amicably. Economic issues are often the bone of contention. In addition, the issue of trust leads to disputes. It has also been noticed that many marriages end with divorce or sometimes informal separations for no genuine reasons.

Solution to such social issues

It is always advisable to think twice before agreeing on a proposal of marriage. The couple should consider whether they belong to the same socio-economic group. The educational match is also important. Though religion is usually neglected, it is always better that the couple are practicing Muslims because divorce is the most hated act among legal (halal) things. On a personal basis, one can tolerate many things in order to run a smooth married life for oneself and sometimes for the children.

Conclusion

In Islam, marriage is Sunnah (a tradition of the Holy Prophet (pbuh)) that protects Muslims from many illegal and antisocial activities. A lot of people do not marry saying that they are afraid of life after marriage. Sometimes, they think that they will not be free. Those who fear divorce often avoid marrying again.

People should have a positive idea about marriage or re-marriage because such acts are purely Islamic. One should believe in Allah’s Mercy, destiny and follow Sunnah without unnecessarily worrying much about the future which is only shaped by the Almighty.

Allah is always Generous, but finally takes account (hisaab).
