NEW YORK — The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states have stressed that they are still committed to narcotic prevention and control through holding seminars and forums in the media outlets and the social media networks, Maj. Gen. Ahmed Bin Saadi Al-Zahrani, director general of Narcotic Control, said in a statement on Thursday.

The GCC warned of consequences of legalizing types of narcotics for the purposes of entertainment on the pretext of safeguarding personal freedom, stressing that each country has the right to issue appropriate legislation, he said.

The GCC pointed out that calls to abolish the death penalty with regard of narcotic crimes would be tantamount to openly encouraging smuggling networks to continue their crimes. — SG/SPA
