PARIS — France said on Wednesday Qatar needed to be transparent and answer the questions its neighbors had asked it.

“Qatar must be completely transparent and answer its neighbors’ questions,” government spokesman Christophe Castaner told reporters in a weekly briefing.

Castaner was responding to a question on whether Paris considered that Qatar supported terrorist groups.

Meanwhile, Mauritania has become the latest country to cut diplomatic relations with Qatar as part of a growing rift between the energy-rich Gulf nation and other Arab countries.

In a statement by the Foreign Ministry, the African country accused Qatar of having connections to terrorist organizations. It said Qatar is “promoting extremist thoughts and spreading chaos and disturbances across many of the Arab countries, resulting in big humanitarian miseries.”

Jordan also announced that it will downgrade its diplomatic representation with Qatar.

Jordan also revoked the license of Doha-based TV channel Al Jazeera, government spokesman Mohammad Al Momani said. — Agencies
