RIYADH — The Arab coalition fighting the Houthi rebels in Yemen said on Thursday it respects international humanitarian law, denying accusations by human rights groups.

The coalition command, in a statement, gave assurances that it "respects the rules of international humanitarian law and human rights in all its military operations" in Yemen.

It said the Arab forces intervened in Yemen on the basis of the principle of self-defense after a direct request from its legitimate president to achieve peace and stability in the country and ensure the safety of its people and the security of the neighboring states.

To defend civilians and shelter them from the impact of the conflict, the coalition had imposed strict rules of engagement in accordance with the principles of international humanitarian law, the statement said.

As well as identifying targets, these rules also focused on the use of precision weapons and dropping leaflets warning people in areas with military targets, it added.

The coalition was also evaluating its air strikes in Yemen and investigates allegations about some incidents, the command said.

As far as humanitarian aspects are concerned, the command said the coalition forces since the start of the operation in Yemen were careful regarding the humanitarian aspect. They have established an evacuation and humanitarian cell to handle all tasks related to humanitarian work and coordinates with government bodies and international nongovernmental organizations to mitigate the suffering of the people of Yemen and to provide necessary supplies.

The coalition facilitates secure exits for civilians and diplomatic missions working in Yemen who wish to be evacuated from the country.
